Ingredients

  • 5 egg yolks
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons brandy (or cognac)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: whipped cream
  • Optional: cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, beat 5 egg yolks, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 cup sugar until the mixture is thickened.
  2. Slowly trickle in 3 tablespoons of brandy or cognac while continuing to beat until well blended.
  3. Pour the mixture into a saucepan and warm over low heat, whisking continuously until thickened. Be patient and avoid boiling.
  4. Once thickened, remove the saucepan from the heat and whisk in 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  5. Allow the advocaat to cool, then refrigerate for at least 3 hours or until ready to serve in small glasses or espresso cups.
  6. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder to serve traditionally, or simply with whipped cream or plain. Enjoy!
