Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 oz pomegranate simple syrup
  • 1 egg white (optional)
  • Ice
  • 1 oz red wine
  • Pomegranate seeds, for topping

Instructions

  1. In a small pot, combine water, granulated sugar, and pomegranate seeds. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. Pour the simple syrup through a strainer into a bowl to catch the seeds. Discard the seeds and let the syrup cool.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, combine whiskey, lemon juice, 1 oz of pomegranate simple syrup, egg white, and ice. Shake for 1 minute, then strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice.
  4. Gently pour red wine over the back of a spoon held just above the surface of the cocktail.
  5. Top with pomegranate seeds.
