Ingredients
- 1 1/2 oz vodka
- 2 oz mandarin juice
- 1/2 oz spiced shiso syrup
- 1/4 oz lemon juice
- Shiso leaf or star anise pod (garnish)
- 10 large shiso leaves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 star anise pod
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- In a shaker, combine vodka, mandarin juice, spiced shiso syrup, and lemon juice.
- Fill the shaker with ice and shake for 10 seconds.
- Double strain the mixture into a chilled coupe glass.
- Garnish the cocktail with a shiso leaf or a star anise pod.
- To make the spiced shiso syrup:
- In a small saucepan, dissolve sugar in water over medium heat.
- Toast the cinnamon stick and star anise pod in a separate pan over low heat until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.
- Add the toasted spices into the simple syrup, remove from heat, and let it come to room temperature.
- Once cooled, remove the cinnamon stick and star anise.
- Blanch the shiso leaves in boiling water for 15 seconds, then immediately place them into a bowl of ice water.
- Pat dry and set aside.
- Blend the simple syrup and shiso leaves in a blender for about 1 minute.
- Strain the mixture with a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
- Store the syrup in the refrigerator.
